Steamworks And Rocket Stuff

Club Scrap came out with a fun kit in February called Steamworks…lots of gears and steam punky stuff.  My kit was delivered just as I was getting ready to do a layout of our visit to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  It was a match made in heaven!
Almost everything I used for this layout came from my Steamworks page kit.  You can even buy some of the stuff without getting the whole kit (but why would you? *grin*) like the ribbon, the cut-a-parts and the stencil (used to add a little texture on the gold mat, bottom of the left page).

Supplies I used not included in my kit are:
**The burgundy ribbon is from Club Scrap’s Hot Chicks kit.

**The green ribbon (bottom of “final mission” photo) and the journaling card are from Club Scrap’s Bookshelves kit.

**I used Topaz Club Scrap ink through the stencil.

**The gears are from Tim Holtz, although you can get some from Club Scrap too!

**The flag sticker has been in my stash a very long time waiting for the perfect use.  I have no idea where it came from.

Colorful Dimension

This month, Club Scrap is challenging us to do a technique using a stencil.  I recently found this video and decided to try the technique using texture paste and Club Scrap re-inkers to make a background:
I used the stencil from the Club Scrap Cape Cod kit (no longer available).  After spreading Ranger Texture Paste, I put down drops of Ruby and Metallic Silver Club Scrap re-inkers then sprayed it with some water.  Using a spatula, I spread out the color a little bit, trying not to blend it too much.  Then I just set it aside to dry.  That’s it!

The best part of this background is that I did it over a piece of watercolor paper that I had used to try out a different technique.  I didn’t like the way that one turned out, but saved it anyway.  It was perfect to use for this background because it was already “colored paper”.

Other supplies I used are:

**Paper from Club Scrap, Ranger Watercolor Paper.

**Both the focal image and the sentiment stamps are from Club Scrap, the eagle from an old Club Scrap special stamp kit called Military and the sentiment from Wild Rose.  Both were stamped with VersaMark ink and embossed with Hematite powder from Club Scrap.

**Ruby Club Scrap Ink was used through the same stencil to add some texture to the red background. Faded Jeans Distress Ink was used to ink the edges of the focal image and the sentiment.

**The wide ribbon is from Club Scraps’ Artifacts kit.  I’m not sure where the narrow ribbon came from.

**The focal image was cut out using a Spellbinders Label Three die, the sentiment was cut out using a die from the Sizzix Tim Holtz Tag Collection.

**The little metallic bling stickers are from Recollections, altered with Copic Marker BV25

The Envelope Please

While I have been trying to add a little something to the envelopes of the cards I make, this month’s challenge at Stamp TV pushed me into doing a little bit more than just adding a coordinating stamp.   The challenge is “to make your envelope just as awesome as your card”. Here is what I came up with:
The stamps are from Gina K. Designs' Framescapes Tropical Skies stamp set.  I stamped them using Wild Dandelion and Dark Chocolate ink from Gina K. Designs.  I added more color using Spectrum Noir colored pencils.

Here is the card that will go inside that envelope:
To make the background, start by spreading Pearlescent Embossing Paste from Dreamweaver through this Swirl Stencil from Hero Arts.  Before removing the stencil, add some Metallic Jade and Yellow Gold Liquid Metals Color Bursts, spritz it with water and carefully use a spatula to spread the color around.  Then remove the stencil and set it aside to dry.

The focal image is from Gina K. Designs’ Tropical Nature stamp set.  It was stamped onto an art orphan (Alcohol Ink spread on velum) with VersaMark ink and embossed using Fine Detail Gold powder from Gina K. Designs.  I used both Wink Of Stella clear and Sparkle Silk from Fun Stampers Journey to highlight the waterfall.

Other supplies I used are:

**Paper from Gina K. Designs, Club Scrap, and Ranger Watercolor Paper. The gold is paper that was handcrafted in Nepal. I found it at this store in Brookfield, WI.

**The sentiment stamp is also Gina K. Designs’ Framescapes Tropical Skies stamp set.  It was stamped with Library Green Archival Ink and embossed using Fine Detail Clear powder from Gina K. Designs.

**The ribbon is from Club Scraps’ Lagoon kit.

**Cracked Pistachio Distress Ink was used to color the watercolor paper behind the stenciled design.

Playing with Paint

Quite a while ago I read about using Distress Metallic Paints on glossy card stock.  Ok, I’ll give it a try.  Oh my, I fell in love with the results!  Here is a card I made with the background:
I squirted out some Tarnished Brass and Brushed Pewter Distress Paint onto my craft mat.  After misting with some water, I swiped a piece of glossy card stock through the paints.  I kept smooshing and swiping the card stock through the paint, using my heat tool to dry between layers, until I ended up with a look that I like.   I don’t think it photographed very well, but it is amazing to see the depth and shimmer that this background has.

To finish off the card, I spread some Pearlescent Embossing Paste from Dreamweaver through a stencil from Club Scrap’s Blossom kit.  I covered the paste with Venus Violet Blue embossing powder from Lindy’s Stamp Gang.  Once the paste was dry, I used the heat tool to melt the powder.

Other supplies I used are:

**Paper from Club Scrap and Gina K. Designs.

**The sentiment stamps is also from Club Scrap’s Blossom kit, stamped with VersaMark and embossed with Fine Detail Gold powder from Gina K. Designs.

**The tag die is from Die-Versions, but is no longer available

**The ribbon is from Club Scrap’s Cherry Blossom kit

**The gems came with my Club Scrap Paradise kit

**The nail heads on the tag are from Mark Richards (bought at a store, but I can’t remember which one).

Faux Leather Experimentation

During Papertrey Ink’s Stamp-A-Faire last year, Nicole Heady posted a video showing how to create a faux embossed leather look.  Since her technique involved an intricate die and my Big Shot is, well, shot (waiting for Amazon to deliver my new one!), I decided to see if I could recreate the look some other way.

I used a mask that came with Club Scrap’s Sorrento kit (no longer available) and some embossing paste to create the “texture” that Nicole got with the die cut image.  My first attempt didn’t turn out the way I hoped, but I made it into a card anyway:
I am much happier with the look of the second attempt:
Quick synopsis of my process: after the texture paste was totally dry, I mixed about 1 Tbs. of Club Scrap Bookbinding Glue with about ¼ cup water.   I placed a sheet of tissue paper over the texture image and brushed on the glue mixture.  For the first attempt, I repeated the process three more times, for the second attempt, I only repeated two more times.  After letting it dry for a few hours, I went over it with various inks to help highlight the texture.   If you are interested in more details of the process, please check out Nicole’s video here.

For both cards, I followed the February card sketch challenge from Club Scrap.

Some other supplies I used are:

**Paper from Club Scrap and Gina K. Designs.

**The background on the first card was created from various sprays, the background on the second card was created using Color Burst. I added the hearts with an old stamp from Club Scrap and some Perfect Gold Perfect Pearls.

**The compass is a die from Cherry Lynn Designs.

**The heart is clear plastic acrylic (I think) that I picked up from a Clear Snap booth (again I think) at a scrapbook show a long time ago. I used Alcohol inks to color the back, then added a piece of velum so the colors show. The little gold heart was cut using an old Taylored Expressions die.

** The sentiment on the first card is from the Club Scrap Destinations kit (no longer available), stamped with Club Scrap White Pigment ink, embossed with Hydrangea Blue Mauve powder from Lindy’s Stamp Gang.

**The sentiment on the second card is from Club Scrap’s We Are Aware special stamp set (no longer available), stamped with VersaMark ink, embossed with Dark Chocolate powder from Gina K. Designs.

**Some of the ribbons are from various Club Scrap kits and some are upcycled.
